Anthony Cavallaro GEOG 1700.003 March 2, 2009 Exercise 6: Islam in the Twenty-First Century: Revive or Reform? Islam is a religious and cultural ideology that originated with the teachings of the prophet Mohammed and is currently the second largest religious belief system in the world, second only to Christianity. Today, however, the very traditional philosophies of Islam are withheld by the “autocratic, corrupt, and incompetent governments, interfering and medieval clerics, stultifying traditions, and internal discord.” For this reason, Islam is due for a reform to aid in the integration of its conventional ideals into today’s modern society. For Islam to be successful in the modern world, it needs the capacity to dispute matter that are of concern to its people without fear of consequence. My Muslims feel that they should not be punished for expressing their views about their faith. Islam is the only religion in which one could be sentenced to death for such expression. In envy of
