Background of Adaptive Immunity: (continued) The molecules recognized by antibodies are called antigens , and the specific portions of the molecules that fit into the combining sites of antibodies are called Epitopes or Antigenic determinants . Complementarity is the ability of molecules to specifically combine with one another – such as a key with a lock. An epitope is quite small – about the size occupied by 7 sugars or amino acids. B cells make millions of forms of antibodies that differ from one another in the specificities of their antigen-binding sites. A single B cell can make antibodies of only one specificity. Each antigen can have many antigenic determinants.
