EMA 4125 – HW -5: Sustainability and Contemporary Issues The incandescent lamp has been the main source of lighting for nearly a century. It is currently being phased out by a more efficient lighting solutions. (a) Discuss the environmental/global/societal impact of using the incandescent lamp and its replacement using the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Your answer should address energy sustainability, global warming, climate change, and /or environmental challenges . What are the environmental issues associated with CFL technology. (b) If a 100 W incandescent lamp has a illumination efficiency of 5% and reaches a maximum temperature of 3500 K. Calculate the area of the filament. Assume radiation losses only with emissivity of 0.5. (c) Schematically sketch of wavelengths of light emission. How would you estimate the percentage of the light that falls into the IR portion of the spectrum. (d) Compare and contrast (using schematic diagram) the heat transfer loss mechanisms
