Beer Hall Putsch - Young plan referendum – Weimar gov attempted to gradual dismantle parts of the Versailles treaty piece by piece in terms of german’s debt, lower payments and extend them way into the future. The right wing wanted total rejection of the treaty – far right collected sig. and gov. signing young plan was put to referendum, they needed a speaker, thus hitler was hired for the young plan ref. campaign (he spread his name, face) he became much more known, the ref. failed but hitler’s career got a huge jump start. Even before the great depression hits, votes are increasing. NY stock market crash offers hitlers second big break – what to do about huge rising unemployment and financial collapse. Weimar const. had a coaltion gov made up a # of parties made it as democratic as possible (each party gets seats based on the % of votes they got in the pop.) No majority gov was ever found. Coalition cannot agree what to do when the depression hits. Austerity vs. Stimulation – options Germany faced, couldn’t agree, gov. fell, polarized
