War crimes – crimes committed against the laws and customary usages of war i.e killing POW, killing pilots, using poison gas, certain practices are outlawed EVEN in war, usually performed by soldiers during war and committed under the “necessity of war” specific to combat o The holocaust has nothing to do with combat, war crimes is not an adequate description for actions that occurred in the holocaust Crimes against humanity – broader term than war crimes, overarching rubric that included all sorts of things that were already outlawed under international law , created to subsume all of things that the Nazis did as an occupying power over the Aryan population Ethnic cleansing – doctrine of we want the land but not its people, seen as the envisioned solution to solving “the Jewish question” Mass death – encompasses events that don’t meet the criteria of genocide but none the less kill millions – differs in the nature of targeting, not the number of people killed
