1 Julia Bishop September 21, 2011 American Heritage Section 09 Essay #3-Response #1 Historically speaking, there have been moments in time when the United States government has had to interfere with certain liberties to keep the country safe. Whether this protection is from alleged communists, terrorists, or a man who distributes pornography, government interferes for the benefit of our safety and security. Although safety can be better assured when the government takes action in a community, governmental action greatly restricts promised liberties in order to take care of issues and problems in the community. This “drawback” of losing liberties, helps the United States stay safe and intact. In order to keep this safety and control, we, as United States citizens must be willing to be able to sacrifice a few liberties for the bigger picture. One situation in which the United States government compromised liberties was when President Bush signed the Patriot Act in 2001, after the September 11th terrorists’
