CHEM 106 Sec. 02 Annya Valderrama Lab Partner: Linda Moreno Lab #5 Taking the A Train I. Introduction This experiment will let us know what will happen if we do not use acidified water when  we reacted zinc with iodine.  Qualitative test will be performed to identify the substances  present. II. Procedures i. Weigh an empty boiling tube.  Record its mass. ii.   Add 2.00 grams of granular zinc to the boiling tube. iii. Add 2.00 grams of iodine crystals to the boiling tube containing zinc metal.     iv. Using a graduated cylinder, add 5 mL of deionized water.   Once added  immediately swirl until solution is colorless. v. After 10 minutes transfer a portion of the precipitate by pouring it to another  test tube.  Dilute small portion with several mL of deionized water. vi. Pour half of the contents to two test tubes. vii. Place these tubes in opposite positions in the centrifuge. viii. Once finished, pour the supernatant into a waste beaker. ix. Wash the precipitate.  Mix well with a stirring rod for 30 seconds.  Centrifuge  for 1 minute to setting #5. x. Identify and conduct qualitative test.
