10/12/11 Physics 20 Lecture 5 4 Momentum The notions of motion, velocity and acceleration describe how an object moves. However, these don’t tell us how objects interact with each other. Momentum is a combination of mass and velocity (momentum = mass x velocity) The only way to change an object’s momentum in by applying force.
10/12/11 Physics 20 Lecture 5 5 The Acceleration of Gravity • All falling objects accelerate at the same rate (not counting friction of air resistance). • On Earth, g 10 m/s 2 : speed increases 10 m/s with each second of falling.
