COLLEGE OF BUSINESS STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT STONY BROOK Course Title: BUS 351 Human Resource Management (Section 03) Fall 2011 Location: Physics P118 Time: Instructor: Prof. Colleen McKean Email Address: Colleen.McKean@stonybrook.edu Office Hours: Monday’s 1:00 – 2:00, Harriman Hall, room 301 COURSE SYLLABUS: Course Description: This course will focus on major trends in personnel management, including problems and issues faced by organizations and individuals in changing times. Responsibilities of the Human Resource Department and the roles that every manager plays, both as a supervisor and as a client of the HR department, are studied. Relationships between theory, practice and relevancy in the context of current situations in the private and public sector will also be discussed. Required Reading : Human Resource Management, 7 th Edition by Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart and Wright. ISBN 978-0-07-353047-5. Objectives of the Course: This course will teach the principles of Human Resource Management and how many forces impact the process. The focus will be on current events, lectures, case studies, text book readings and a real-world team project. Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to identify the various dynamics that affect HR management issues. Students will understand why Human Resource managers cannot operate within a vacuum because of the complex legal and regulatory constraints and other outside influences have on the process. Students will understand the process of employee recruitment, motivation, compensation and various other topics that create the employment environment. Course Requirements Your grade will be determined by your performance on two exams, class assignments, a team project (3 parts) and class participation. The details of your team project will be reviewed during class on Wednesday, August 31st.
