PHYS 2300 – Op Amp Circuits Lab Operational Amplifiers - “Op Amps” Before you start to build your first op amp circuit, we should take the time to remind you of three points: 1) How the integrated circuit (IC) package goes in the breadboard. The IC package style is called DIP (dual in-line package). 2) A pint that may need to go without says, but sometimes needs mentioning: the op amp needs power, applied at two specific pins. Circuit diagrams normally omit these connections, thus the reminder here. 3) You should decouple the power supplies with a small ceramic capacitor (0.01 to 0.1 microFarads). If you begin to see fuzz on your circuit outputs, check to see if you decoupled the power supply. Most students don’t believe in decoupling until they see that fuzz for the first time. Op amp circuits, using feedback in all cases, are peculiarly vulnerable to such “parasitic” oscillations. Open-Loop Test Circuit Before building your first op amp circuit, you should be reminded of something that should be obvious (but is nevertheless often overlooked!): The op amp always needs power, applied at two pins; nearly always that will be +/-10V in this course (even when labeled +/-15V) . We remind you of this because circuit diagrams nearly always omit the power connections. On the other hand, many op amp circuits make no direct connection between the chip and ground . Don’t let that rattle you; the circuit always includes a ground -- in the important sense: common reference called zero volts.

2 Astound yourself by watching the output voltage as you slowly twiddle the pot, trying to apply 0 Volts. Is the behavior consistent with the 411 specification that claims “Gain (typical) = 200V/mV”? Don’t spend long astounding yourself, as this is an abnormal way to use an op amp. Move on to more useful circuits!
