September 15, 2010 C118: the sophistic movement General characteristics The word sophist means wise man. However, the movement split between those only concerned with how to be successful and admired and those concerned with how to explore issues and make good decisions. All sophists rejected finding the “truth: (episteme) The goal of a speaker was to establish probabilities To be reasonable amounted to telling a story or giving an explanation that makes sense to people. “Logos” means “story” and “making sense.” All taught the importance of basing arguments on ideas already held by the audience The “test” of a student’s learning was to give speeches to other students who were their fellow citizens Learning with a sophist gave a different perspective than learning by emersion in activities What Athenians feared about sophists: Teaching our children to be irresponsible, tricksters, thereby o Undermining Athenian democracy o Teaching by foreigners o Making children disrespectful of tradition

Two sophists of the less responsible school: • Corax of Syracuse (around 460s bcc) o Professed no interest in what is true or more likely. o Emphasized style, delivery and emotional appeals o Taught the basics of speech organization o Taught ways of making the lesser seem better cause o Unpaid fee • Gorgias or Leontini (480-375BCE) o Like corax he professed no interest in what was right o Offered arguments to support his position that the truth was irrelevant There is no truth.
