CSC 3351 Operating Systems Test 1 (10/13/2000) (150 points) NAMES BEHIND PLEASE !!!!!! 1. Computer Architecture (4 points per question) Note that 1K = 1024 = 2 10 . Q1. We want to design a microprocessor that can have a maximum addressable space of 128K addresses. What should be the size of the address bus? Q2 . A microprocessor has a maximum memory capacity of 256 Kbytes where the unit of storage is 2 bytes per address. What should be the size of the address bus? Q3. Consider a microprocesssor with a 20-bit address bus and a 8-bit data bus. The microprocessor is driven by a clock of frequency f. The bus cycle takes 8 cycles and an instruction has 24 bits. What should be the frequency f such that this microprocessor can read 2 millions of instructions per second ? Q4. We want to design a computer system with a two level memory hierarchy: i.e a cache and a main memory. The access time to the cache is 20ns while the access time to the main memory is 200ns. The hit ratio for the main memory is 1. What is the smallest value for the hit ratio of the cache such that it is worth building this system with a two-level memory system? Q5.
