Kunal Bhan BISC 220: Friday Lab 11 – 1:50 pm TA: Erin Ragland Determining which concentration of sodium solution in various solutions of the same volume yields the greatest volume of carbon dioxide produced Introduction: Just as important as photosynthesis is for the sustenance of plants by forming glucose to help fuel cell processes, cellular respiration is another such essential process, as it makes ATP to power more cell work. In the absence of oxygen though, cellular respiration (normally an aerobic process) takes on its anaerobic form of fermentation, which can come either as alcoholic (generating two molecules each of ethanol and CO 2 ) or lactic (generating two molecules of lactate). While it is more desired to have aerobic respiration since there is more ATP formed and is thus more useful to the cell, anaerobic is still a good alternative when there is no oxygen gas (O 2 ) present, especially since it still produces some ATP, although minimal at best. For this current experiment, a preliminary experiment was run to observe the effects of varying quantities of DI water, 5% yeast suspension, and 20% glucose solution on the amount of CO 2 gas which was formed by fermentation in a water bath of 37 o C. Following this, a second experiment was devised where the effects of adding different concentrations of salt solutions to four fermentation tubes put in the aforementioned water bath of 37 o C to see how that impacted the volume of CO 2 formed. In both experiments, observations were made at regular time intervals to see the amount of CO 2 generated. The expected result for this
