Unformatted text preview: Bryce DaFonte 10/12/2010 BRAE 236 Lab 3 - Pipe Flow Rate Measurements Introduction: Flow rate is a key component in the understanding of hydraulics. In order to understand flow rate, various methods of measuring flow rate in pipelines were demonstrated during the lab, and as groups we examined each method and then compared it to the standard method. The methods included In-Line Propeller Meter, Collins Tube 2-point method, Collins Tube 10-point method, MagMeter, Venturi Meter, V-Cone Meter, and the Panametrics Acoustic Meter. Each of these methods were measuring the same pipeline system with the same flow rate. Each method had different but similar readings, and these different readings were all compared to the standard flow rate, which was found using the Volumetric Weigh Tank. The standard flow rate that will be used to compare every other flow rate to for this lab will be 1730 gpm. A summary of each method including the average flow rate found by that particular method and the percent error compared to the standard flow rate is included in this lab write-up. In-Line Propeller Meter - McCrometer The first station of the lab was located at the In-Line Propeller Meter where we determined an instantaneous flow rate and a flow rate using the totalizer. The calculated flow rates for each of these can be found on Page DS-1 of the attached handouts. The percent error for each of these readings can be found in Appendix A. Although the percent error for this device is low, the readings might have been read in error since this is supposed to be one of the worse measurement devices as far as accuracy. The advantages of this type of meter are the ease of installation and reading while the disadvantages include clogging of the pipe from debris and turbulence. Common problems associated with these meters are inlet designs, the elbows and valves upstream, submergence tendencies, inside diameters of pipes vary, and trash. Collins Tube Measurements 2 - Point Method The next station used the Collins Tube 2 - Point Method for determining the flow rate. The dimensions of the pipe, which is directly used to determine the average flow rate, is included on Page DS-4 of the attached handouts.
