Fall, 2009 (Soc.311:06) Midterm exam: Oct. 26, 2009 (5:00-6:20 pm) Note: 1. Don’t be late, the test will start on time! 2. There will 40 multiple choice questions and 10 true/false questions (2 points each). 3. You must use a #2 pencil to fill in the Scantron sheet. 4. The exam will be based on - The lecture: All lecture slides - The textbook: Chapter 2 (Nature of Science) , 4 (elements of research design) , 5 (measurement) , 6 (sampling) , 7 (experimentation) , 9 (survey research) , 11 (field research), 12 (research using available data) - Extra readings: “The Mark of a Criminal Record” only! Broad study questions: These are broad study questions; the actual test questions will be more specific. 1. What is the scientific method? What is the positivism? Check with Francis Bacon, empiricism, inductive reasoning versus deductive reasoning. 2. What is the unit of analysis? What is the ecological fallacy? 3. What are the attributes of “good” research questions? What kinds of questions are not researchable?
