Sociology of Race and Racism Tuesday, November 01, 2011 2:00 PM Some things you should know about race… o Race is a modern idea (since 1508) used to justify European colonization o Race has no genetic basis, it is a social construction o Human subspecies do not exist (but "believing is seeing") o Skin color really is only skin deep (what about eye color, blood type, foot size") o Most variation is within not between "races" (issue of overlap again) o The transatlantic slave trade was racialized slavery o Race and freedom (of whites) were born together o Race is used to justify social inequalities ("as natural") o Race is not biological but racism is real ("things are real if real in their consequences") o Colorblindness will not end racism ("we are all human") Pretending we don’t see racial inequality isn't the same thing as creating equality o Racial Hierarchy shifts Definition o Racial groups are created when society attaches meanings to physical differences Racial Classification
