PHL Tuesday, September 22, 2009 Republic Book 2 What kind of good is this? Pure good – things that are valuable within themselves and only within themselves. (joy) Internal instrumental good – are goods that lead to something else. (knowledge) External instrumental good – things that are valued within themselves as well as the positive consequence. Something we don’t always enjoy but we do it b/c we are told it is good for us. (medicine, exercise) Why rule? Honour Wealth Fear Altruism Why be good? (Moral Scepticism) – We’re only good or just to result in positive consequence. Fear of moral punishment – fear of punishment that keeps you on the right track. Fear of divine punishment (B: 365e Caphalus / Pascal echo) Timidity – shy of taking risks. Convention – tradition, go along to get along. Positive Consequence Regulative ideal City (an u-topos, no place, or utopian thought- experiment) – No place b/ c it simply doesn’t exist. Why?
