PHL Thursday, October 8, 2009 Socrates: gadfy: ignorance (more oF a method than a program), dialectic, contradiction, crisicism Plato: mystic(?): vision, deduction, universalization - top down (divided line, cave - everything below the top is just a refection/ shadow/ lesser Form) Aristotle: scientist: observation, induction (draw general conclusions based on repeated instances), generalization on the basis oF observation - bottom up (tries to understand the world by close examination oF things that we know - you start with tokens, and make your way to types Aristotle the Stagirite (384-322 BCE); a Metic (athenian catergory - like a guess worker - allowed to be part oF a society but only by suFFerance - he was not a citizen) From Macedonia The chair: aristotle - its a discrete object in the world that is seperate From other objects in the world - our experience is seperated into chunks lets look at a particular chair and see what it teaches us Causality: - material & formal - its here, it has a material reality and it is made oF something. we
