PHL Tuesday, October 13, 2009 Aristotle on Plato ʼ s Theory of the Forms: (“friends of ours” -> Academy/Lyceum rivalry -> patricidal energy) 1. no Form in ordered species (ex: good, better, best - gives us some knowledge, comparative quality) Aristotle says : you cannot go from short, shorter, shortest. .. to shortness as such 2. no Form across categories (good knife, good horse, good sportscar - means the same thing - inherent in the thing in some degree - says plato) Aristotle says : a good knife is not always a sharp knife. .. and the characteristics of a good knife do not carry over to a good horse. .. a good horse needs speed 3. no Form across different sciences 4. “Good in itself” not stable; cf. Third Man Regress (standing in the sun) Aristotle says: if the logic is participation, you cannot stop the regress (ex: meta-meta-meta form example - must be a third man beyond the form) *strongest argument 5. eternity is irrelevant - you cant prove something being eternal *practical argument
