PHL Thursday, March 4, 2010 Neurosis - manifestation of our awareness of desires being constrained, social condition, everyone has neurosis Psychosis Religion - religion is a drug, opiate of the masses, it is an unacknowledged drug (unacknowledged illusion) Ch III 3 Sources of Unhappiness - nature’s power (ex: natural disasters, undimmed even by technology) - our bodily feebleness (we are weak creatures with a lot of needs, ex: we need to eat every couple of days, Fnal feebleness is that the body will die) - social relations (they are up to us) frustration/ disappointment (how to social relations lead to. ..) beauty (social relations and architecture organized on principles of beauty) cleanliness (we try to organize a social order on terms of cleanliness - infrastructure: about taking the dirt away such as recycling, sewers) order (ideas of order can be elevated to see what we are up to in our social relations) ideas (religion, philosophy) + utility/pleasure : might look like they are expressing desires, but it is an orderly concept translating happiness into an order-less logic (?) p. 49
