Monday, January 11, 2009 HINDUISM - term ‘Hinduism’ - from Persian Sindhus later used by Muslims and Europeans to refer to non-Muslims living east of the Indus River - Is hinduism polytheistic or monotheistic ? it is both, or neither, you do not want to limit Hinduism multiple ‘Hinduisms’ - many traditions (regional variances in India) - Indus valley or Harappan civilization (c. 2700-1500? BCE) - ancient India - Vedic culture (c. 1500-500 BCE) named after Vedas (“knowledge”) Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda each consists of 4 parts: hymns, ritual, instructions, ‘forest books’, philosophical texts texts in this sense means literature, and were initially passed down orally probably composed between 1700-600 BCE - shruti (“that which was heard”) vs. smrti (“that which is remembered”) literature sanskrit - sacred Vedic language - many Vedic gods: Agni (god of fire), Indra, Soma (god of the moon), Varuna, etc.
