The Sanctity of Life - Wednesday, September 15, 2010 “The bioethics of everyday life” - exploration of the moral questions that each of us face in life of our biological natures (type 3 questions from last day) Reproduction 1. Conception - sexually, artificially - mans sperm unites with a woman’s egg 2. Zygote: - 40% fail to implant in the women’s womb - 20% more fail to implant and more quickly miscarry (the woman may not know she is pregnant) 3. Embryo - it is known as no longer a zygote, but an embryo after day 14 - the beginnings of differentiation of cells and forming of a spinal cord/ circulatory system - about 2mm long 4. Fetus - 8 weeks: 25 mm long, human form - 22 weeks: sentience (brain activity and awareness; ex: sensitivity to pleasure and pain), beginning of viability/ can possibly live on their own - 30 weeks: brain activity associated with sleeping/ waking 5. Third Trimester - Primarily increase in size and strength rather than new internal development Reasons for Abortion? - social stigma
