PHL281H - Wednesday, September 22, 2010 - if your rights are being violated, it is permissible for a bystander to step in, but they do not have to - maybe we should hire someone who’s job it is to protect our rights - Stage (2) Pregnancy from Rape: - some people say that right to life is more important than the right that a woman has towards her body - what does it mean to say that the fetus has a right to life? and does that right trump the womans right to control her body? What is a right to life? A) The right not to be killed? follows from our original rights: our right against everyone to our body. Generally, no one can put a bullet or a knife in it. but abortion involves causing the death of fetus inadvertently (in removing it from womb), not the direct killing of it - if this were possible, you would have to do that in order to respect the fetuses right to life might put limits on abortion methods (e.g. consider if it were possible to remove fetus without its dying) the right not to be killed does not give you the right against others that they not cause your death B) The right to what you need to continue living? against whom?
