Elvis is drafted Little Richard is born again and becomes a preacher Jerry Lee Lewis is blacklisted Chuck Barry is arrested plane crash takes the life of Buddy Holly, Richy Valence and the big bopper Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller - Leiber wrote the song Hound Dog, to be preformed by a black R&B artist named Big Mama Thornton - Leiber and Stoller were Jewish boys who became intimate with black music culture and created a song writing tem - created a new concept of black music/ blue singers - lush velvety sound of sweet soul - with strings - constructed a form of “black pop” that has a large influence on the 1960s Ben E. King - talks about Leiber/ Stoller impact on rock & roll songs - started singing on the corners with people he met from school - replacement singer for the drifters, moved into the recording studio with help from Leiber and Stoller Doo-Wop - in reality, it was a street culture; they weren’t on tv - rooted in gospel harmonies of the black church - a style of close-harmony acapella singing - main characteristics are that they are not singing the same not, but all different harmonies - also, the non-verbal syllables of doo-wop are also key Analyzing a song - formal structure and social content as well as an aspect of performance - the structure of the song is “repetition and contrast” - ex: Will you love me tomorrow?; first two stanzas are the same as the last, and the third stanza is
