RLG 220 - Monday, November 15, 2010 Richard Rubenstein: - Is there something in the logic of Christian theology, when pushed to a metaphysical extreme, which ends with the justification of, if not the incitement to, the murder of the Jews. - - p415B: “How can Jews believe in an omnipotent, beneficent God after Auschwitz? Traditional Jewish theology maintains that God is the ultimate, omnipotent actor in the historical drama. It has interepreted every major catastrophe in Jewish history as God’s Punishment of a sinful Israel” - The question is not “How did He let this happen?” but, “How did he not rescue these people?” - Rubenstein seems to assume that if omnipotent and beneficence are considered to be the only two aspects of the relationship with God, then if these are falsified or believed through experience, one is left with nothing - p418B: “God stands before us no longer as the final censor but as the final reality before which and in terms of which all partial realities are to be measured”: By censor he means “judge”. There are two types of judges: In our society, judgement is the job of the judiciary. On what basis do they judge? On what criteria? It is based on written law created by the parliament.
