RLG224 - Tuesday, October 26, 2010 Grant Continued - history making spirit - we are changing and transforming nature - we do not say “it is hot, therefore we must sweat”, but we say “lets go into an air-conditioned building” - we are polluting rivers, pumping carbon into the atmosphere - we think of ourselves as history making, until we realize that we are ruining the atmosphere - what are the limits to our history making? are there categorical limits to what you can/cannot do? - China has been dominated by maoist marxism over the past 70 years, totally committed to a new future - after conversion experience, he believes that human beings are not their own, they are in some sense Gods and in some sense are limited in what they can do in the world - idea that we can hold progressive spirit/spiritual law together is a myth and halts us from ethical decision making as there is limitation Abortion - p 31 and 32 - talks about the human soul - but how do we know at what point a fetus is a soul? how do we know that it has a soul? - restrictive: the only time you can take a fetus’s life is in the protection of a mothers life - 1969: Trudeau and the liberal party - there was a move away from a restrictive law, which then went to a moderate abortion law - in which doctors would take the case to a committee, and then if her case was acceptable she could have an abortion - this eventually lead to a string of protests in 1988, saying that there should be no circumstances in which a woman cannot demand an abortion - today, a woman can terminate pregnancy for any way - Grant fought against this liberalization - he was accused of being anti-feminist - the right to control ones reproductive capacity is at the heart of a feminist debate - the only way to produce equality between women and men, is to give women that control - regardless of the legal structure, it is still a decision that a woman has to make. ..
