Meditation Terminology for “Meditation” - Bhavana - meditation/ development/ cultivation - Yoga - Dhyana - deep thought - Samadhi - concentration - Samatha - calm - Vipasyana - insight Two Categories put forward in the Theravadin tradition: - samatha meditation: leading to tranquil states - Vipasyana meditation: leading to the mindfulnes, involving a cognitive transformation these two categories are not clearly differentiatied in the Pali Canon, but rather systematized by Busshaghose in the Visuddhimagga (5th Century CE) It is said that both states are needed to attain final liberation Five Hindrances to the cultivation of awareness and progress on the Buddhist path - sensual desire ( kamacchanda) - ill will ( vyapada) - sloth and toropr ( thina-middha ) - restlessness and remorse - skeptical doubt Samatha Meditation: leading to tranquil states - practice involving the six smrti (Pali: sati ) or “rememberances” the Buddha the Dharma the Sangha the rewards of ethical conduct
