Birth of Communism 11/01/2008 10:06:00 Early 1930s in dilapidated house, 9 Vietnamese intellectuals met to form  communist party.  By 1931, party had directed powerful peasant uprising against French  police and landlords – suppressed by French foreign legion.  Best known nationalist  organization in Vietnam after a few years. Why communism was so successful so quickly (least persuasive to most): More willing to use violence/terror than other groups because they were  Marxist, felt no moral or religious restraints. o Ho Chi Mihn ordered death of many oppositions o Still, inadequate explanation for their success o All violence they produced was directed back against them in equal  measure Little Foreign Backing o Extensive foreign aid almost a curse, as it hurts the nationalist nature  and pride Better organized than their competitors o “Front” techniques – disguised communist organizations to recruit
