Take Home Quiz Megan Michels Question 2: 11/16/09 Compare and contrast Lidwina to Heloise. How did the teachings and practices of Christianity in the Middle Ages affect each woman’s life? To what extent were they able to find a place within the male dominated institution of the Church and even shape the teachings and practices of the church based on their own beliefs and experiences? In comparing Lidwina to Heloise, they are considerably similar figures in their respective historical time periods. Both women showed variance from the rest of society in their religious practices of Christianity by preserving their own power rather than conforming to the standards of inferiority of women in Medieval Christian society. They found a substantial place within the male dominated institution of the Church by substantiating their beliefs of independence and service to God and not being swayed by the common practices of faith. Each woman shaped the general ideas of the church by giving new meaning to their faith and preserving their own takes on Christianity. Lidwina’s uniquely extreme devotion to her religious faith made her become well known as a saintly woman through suffering to save others and to be saved. Her entire faith revolved around the practice of daily eating. Lidwina began giving up worldly food
