Woodruff Reading Notes: I. People worth watching: Characters a. 5.1 Being a Character a.i. “Character”: a person worth watching a.ii. Satisfy 2 Conditions: a.ii.1. Active agents a.ii.2. Able to engage our emotions b. 3 Parts of Definition of Character: b.i. Being a character = matter of degree b.ii. Requires complicity of audience to believe the character b.iii. Doesn’t matter where characters come from c. 5.2 Mimesis and Imagination c.i. Stage characters may or may not be drawn from life c.i.1. Being lifelike doesn’t make a character worth watching c.i.2. Stage characters may be mimetic c.i.2.a. Mimesis makes a rep. have the same effect. on the audience as the real thing c.i.2.a.i. Not all theater represents characters or actions; so it’s not all mimetic c.ii. Actors must at least seem to have a choice c.iii. Imagination helps provide audience with context in which a choice is plausible d. 5.3 Being a Particular Character d.i. Text-based account of character d.ii. Quality-based account d.iii. Stock characters; not very interesting d.iii.1. Commedia characters d.iv. Characters are worth watching when we find an emotional connection to them e. 5.4 Agency and Ethos e.i. Character e.i.1. Leaving before final curtain call = bad etiquette II. 6.1 Making Time: a. Measuring Time = important, w/out it we lose interest b. Sacred time: what one can and cannot do during the sacred time of ritual when the performance is taking place c. 2 ways to measure theater: c.i. Some combination of clock, calendar or planetary motion c.ii. Plot III. 6.2 Sacred Space: a. Watcher-watched distinction is essential a.i. When no one is watching, it’s no longer theatrical b. Untouchable, except for the people who are marked off c. Ritual, tradition c.i. Penalties for violators of space c.ii. No time when its not sacred c.ii.1. Not altogether forbidden, consecrated people can enter c.ii.2. Have to understand who can enter the space, and when c.iii. Those who enter space have roles d. Measuring space: d.i.
