The professional issue that this article addresses is the issue of racial disparities in breast cancer diagnosis and care. This article focuses around the main idea that black women are less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than white women, and yet they have a higher mortality rate. There are several factors that contribute to the inferior outcomes of black women, “including more advanced stage at diagnosis, a lower proportion of hormone receptor-positive tumors, differences in comorbidity, provider variability, and a range of socioeconomic and cultural factors.” The interesting fact that this article discusses is that even when studies have controlled for variances in socioeconomic status, race still influenced the likelihood that patients would receive adjuvant treatment. Some studies have found that with equal breast cancer care is given, patients of all races have similar outcomes while other studies have reported differences in overall survival, despite equal treatments in a controlled setting.
