Karissa Burkholder A41996434 Chapter 4 Discussion Questions 1) A similarity between neurotransmitters and hormones is that when these chemical messengers are both released, they help to maintain homeostasis. A difference between them is that neurotransmitters are released by neurons and hormones are released by glands. 2) It is important for the body to have chemical messengers that can be quickly released and rapidly inactivated because the body is constantly adjusting to the environment and needs to maintain homeostasis. 3) Receptors are important in understanding the effects of drugs of abuse because they help to regulate what chemicals and messages get through to affect the body. Drugs exert their effects on the body either directly or indirectly by interacting with the receptors. 4) It is not surprising that drugs that affect the catecholamine transmitters also affect the endocrine system because catecholamine includes epinephrine and epinephrine is released by the adrenal medulla which is in the endocrine system. 5) Some mechanisms where a drug of abuse can increase the activity of dopamine transmitter systems in the brain are that if the drug elevates mood, they can alter the activity of dopamine in some way, particularly in brain regions that regulate mental states.
