ISLAM : PAPER ONE (DUE IN CLASS ON 10/25/2011) Choose one of the following titles and write a paper of 1,300 -1,700 words in response to it. See notes about papers below. 1. The foundation story of Islam locates its origins with the Prophet Muhammad in early 7 th -century Mecca. Explain the purpose then of the identification of that era into which he was born as a state, or age, of ignorance “jahiliyya.” What functions are fulfilled by the Abrahamic myth in Muslim depictions of their heritage? 2. With reference to passages you have studied, briefly describe the distinctive features of the “Uthmanic” text of the Qur’an. Highlight some of the challenges in understanding this text and explain how the sira serves as an important exegetical tool. 3. Briefly consider the importance of the sunnah of the Prophet, as expressed in the text by Ibn `Abd al-Barr. What have been the traditional Muslim ways of checking the authenticity of hadiths about the Prophet, and why have certain modern academicians expressed skepticism towards such methods?
