Corrections Accreditation and Privatization 2 Professionalization has become a standard value in the American Corrections System. Accreditation is an important tool used to determine the national standards and to promote improved quality of correction facilities. Corrections accreditation affects the professional development of corrections officers. Most publicly run correction facilities promote corrections accreditation but other alternatives to improving the corrections system are apparent. Privatization is a widely used alternative to public corrections and helps in many aspects of the American Corrections System. Although most Americans probably view the corrections system in a negative aspect (because of the association of criminal element), professionalism is a very important aspect to the operations. Accreditation plays a key role in establishing a professional environment to correction facilities. According to the American Correctional Association (ACA) (2011), “Accreditation is a system of verification that correctional agencies/facilities comply with national standards promulgated by the American Correctional Association. Accreditation is achieved through a series of reviews, evaluations, audits and hearings.” (Standards and Accreditation).
