Police Discretion 2 Police Discretion Discretion is a determination whether to pursue an action against a situation by an individual. The use of police discretion is exercised in order to come to a decision of which actions are more important to pursue. Police officers must take all information in that is provided and make a determination as to who, what, and how they approach each situation. “The police make policy about what law to enforce, how much to enforce it, against whom, and on what occasions.” (An Introduction to Policing, 2005, p. 120). Police discretion is exercised to eliminate much time spent in courtrooms for petty crimes. Enforcing all laws such as traffic violations would take resources not available to police departments so discretion is used tremendously in these events. The enforcement of all laws would also project a poor perception of police in a community and would flood the courts and jails that are already overcrowded.
