Five Pillars of Islam 2 The central beliefs of Islam are found in the teachings of the religion. “Islam is an Arabic word which means peace, purity, acceptance, and commitment. As a religion, Islam calls for complete acceptance of the teachings and guidance of God.” (Living Religions, 2005, p. 372). The religion is monotheism and teaches from birth that there is only the one true God and his messenger is Muhammad. Revelations received by the prophet were transcribed into the religious scriptures called the Qur’an. The Qur’an describes the unity of God and the misery to those that did not follow his word. The central beliefs of Islam are reflected through the general practices known as the Five Pillars of Islam. Shahadah The first pillar of Islam is the belief in the unity of God referred to as the Shahadah. The expression of the Islam faith is spread through the belief in the Oneness of the
