World Religions 2 Religion has been around since the beginning of time and some believe even before the time on earth began. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as LDS or Mormon, is a Christian religion. The teachings and principles are thought to be from the original church that Jesus Christ established during his time on earth. The belief is that Jesus is the son of God and was sent to earth as the savior of all mankind. The restoration of Jesus Christ’s Church is said to be founded through revelation to Joseph Smith in New York in 1830. The Worldwide organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints population is more than 12 million members. Mormons believe that before anyone is born on earth he or she is part of a spirit world, living as spirit children with God. They are sent to earth by their Heavenly Father to live a life of faith and gain a body. Throughout this earthly existence they learn right from wrong, good from evil. According to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (2011), “Before this world was organized, we had spirit bodies and lived in a premortal world with Heavenly Father, the father of our spirits. We knew Him personally just as He knows us. He desired that we become as He is—having eternal life and exaltation. He presented His plan to us in a great council during our premortal existence. As He taught us the great plan of happiness, we learned that, as spirits, our progress was limited. We needed to obtain a physical body. God’s plan would demand much of us; some would be lost if they did not have faith or keep the commandments.” (The Merciful Plan of the Great Creator, para. 5). Contrary to some speculations The Church of Jesus Christ considers themselves a Christian religion. The belief is apparent in the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that Heavenly Father sent his only son to earth to take upon himself

Although some view Mormons as a cult, the very foundation of the religion is stated as the restoration of the original Church of Jesus Christ. Christians as well as followers of the LDS faith believe and accept that Jesus is the Christ and Savior foretold about in the Old Testament of the Bible. Like many religions, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints uses alternative materials for their teachings. The Book of Mormon is a very valued set of scriptures of the religion. Followers believe the Book of Mormon was provided through revelation from God. The Book of Mormon is said to be an abridgement of the people of the Americas that Jesus Christ visited.
