The Official Language Movement 2 The argument that all citizens of America should speak English, are discussed in an article in the Westside Gazette. One person interviewed for the article believes that non- Spanish speaking people are lazy and do not want to learn English. Another person interviewed in the article points out that the Founding Fathers wrote the United States Constitution in English indicating that English is the official language (Joy, D., 2009). According to Park, M.Y. (2002), Supporters of bilingual education believe that individuals need ample time to learn English. The opposition insists the intent to force English on the non-English speaking communities is to ensure they are included in the culture of the United States.
