Laboratory Information for Statistics 296 (Fall 2007) As noted on the syllabus, this is a course in modern applied nonparametric statistics. To quote from the Preface of the course textbook: At one time, nonparametric methods were thought of as quick, hand-calculation methods, suitable only for simple designs and small data sets. However, the availability of high-speed computing to carry out time-consuming or difficult computations has enabled nonparametric statistics to come into its own as a field of statistics. Furthermore, it is noted that: Statistical software is indispensable for the implementation of modern statistical methods, and the area of nonparametric statistics is no exception. Therefore, in order to adequately present a modern course on nonparametric statistics, it has been decided to adopt a new, modern text and to integrate the statistical software package SAS into the course. This also aligns STAT 296 with the other 200-level applied methods STAT classes.
