The reaction mixture is next poured into a freshly prepared solution of 48 g. of potassium bicarbonate in 200 cc. of water; the resulting mercurous carbonate is filtered by suction in the presence of a few pieces of solid carbon dioxide and finally washed thoroughly with 1400 cc. of water saturated with carbon dioxide.
