David Chao Writing 1 Ms. Ford 2/1/08 The ad that I chose to analyze came from the January 28, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine, and was sponsored by Toyota for their new 2008 Sequoia SUV model. The ad first caught my attention because it had a lot of action going on in the center of the picture, so I was inclined to give my attention to it. The first thing that caught my eye when looking at the ad was the picture of the two young adults in the middle of playing bicycle polo. While this picture, which takes up most of the ad space, has no explicit message, the ad’s implicit message is clear – the 2008 Toyota Sequoia is a car intended for anyone who enjoys playing sports and exercising, or simply likes

Unformatted text preview: having a good time. However, the Toyota Sequoia is not limited to active adults as the implicit message implies in the central picture. Lining the bottom of the ad is a picture of five kids, which explicitly states that with its 8 passenger seating, there is more than enough room for a big family to travel in and that the Sequoia is a multiuse vehicle. Even furthering its consumer base, Toyota places a picture of a teenager on the bottom of the ad, hoping to imply that their vehicle appeals to teenagers as well. Lining the top of the ad were the words “the perfect day isn’t always up to the weather.”...
