Excerpt from a recent listserve posting List-Id: Public Health Nutrition Discussion and Information Group <phnutr-l.u.washington.edu> “Epidemiological research and recent whole-diet trials reveal that diet-disease relationships are considerably more powerful and consistent than nutrient-disease relationships, because food provides nutrients in mixes rather than in isolation, and these interact synergistically to increase overall health benefits. In fact, trials with individual vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants often yield disappointing or paradoxical results. On the other hand, diets reflecting health-promoting, food- based guidelines are nutritionally balanced, promote weight control, and have proven highly protective against major chronic diseases.” Epi Byte
