Roosevelt to react with new policies on job discrimination. Booker T. Washington 1890- 1915 Head of educational institute for African Americans in Tuskegee, American educator, author, orator and political leader. He assisted Presidents Roosevelt and Taft in appointing African Americans to patronage positions. He was representative of the last generation of black leaders born in slavery and spoke on behalf of blacks living in the South. Washington was born into slavery to a white father and a slave mother in a rural area in southwestern Virginia . Washington contributed secretly and substantially to legal challenges against segregation and disfranchisement of blacks. In his public role, he believed he could achieve more by skillful accommodation to the social realities of the age of segregation. James
