NIXON'S POLITICS 2 Nixon's Politics President Richard Milhous Nixon became President during the Viet Nam war only serving one term. President Nixon resigned in 1974 before he could be impeached. Nixon did not like the foreign policies and wanted to throw out both the New Deal and the Great Society. The Nixon administration inherited the Viet Nam conflict in 1969, although the Nixon administration tried to improve relations with the Soviet Union by trying to ease tension between nations, and also took the unparalleled step of creating diplomatic relations with Communist China. Neither of the events was able to bring resolution or change on the Viet Nam battlefields. President Richard M. Nixon pursued a policy to improve the relations between China and the Soviet Union. In 1969, there was a border dispute between China and the Soviet Union came close to a full fledged war. This gave President Nixon the chance to start his “China Game,” by moving toward the Chinese to increase his leverage against the Russians and visa versa.
