Excel Group Project 1: Collecting and Analyzing Financial Market Data FIN 3134, Klock Due: Wed, Feb 16 th 2010 (4:30PM) Overview Please read the entire assignment BEFORE beginning any work. When complete, you should have two files – one Excel and one Word. Please submit the Excel file to the digital drop box for the class using the naming convention: Last name_First initial_FIN3134_HW1 for ONE person in the group. For example my file would be: Klock_D_FIN3134_HW1. However, please make sure that ALL names appear at the top of the first page in the Excel file. The Word document (which should have cover sheet – again with all names) will include your graphs (at least one graph per hypothesis) and your four conclusions and a brief write-up substantiating your each conclusion. It will be printed (preferably in color) and turned-in “hard copy.” For this assignment you will analyze several sets of market data and support or contradict a particular hypothesis. There are four hypotheses in all, each using a different pair of data sets. The 15-year timeline for all data is Jan 1, 1996 until Dec 30, 2010. To successful complete this assignment you will need to gather, verify, clean, manipulate, graph and analyze four different sets of data. Excel Worksheet Set-up To complete the assignment you will need to locate various types of market data from several different sources and move that data into a single, multiple-page Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet will have the following five pages. Use the “insert worksheet” under the insert menu to add the additional three worksheets. 1) Final Output – I recommend placing your finalized graphs on this page. 2) Treasury Rates 3) Inflation 4) GDP 5) Unemployment / Unemployment Duration 6) Junk – you may want to include an extra tab for miscellaneous data manipulations Hint: To re-name the worksheets, double click on the tab that reads “Sheet 1.” 1

The Assignment: Testing Hypotheses Hypothesis One: Average duration of unemployment is a leading indicator of economic recession. Analyze (graph) the unemployment duration data versus the GDP data to either support or contradict this hypothesis. Hypothesis Two: The Treasury yield curve is a leading indicator of economic recession. Analyze (graph) the Treasury yield curve data versus the GDP data to either support or contradict this hypothesis. You will need to graph several yield curves (cross-sectional graphs) rather than graphing the time series of the data. Hypothesis Three:
