BIT 3414 Copyright 2011 p. 1 Scheduling Scheduling in a Batch Production environment is challenging due to the variety and volume of jobs and processing requirements. Responsibilities of Production Control Department Loading Check availability of material, machines & labor, and allocate work to resources Sequencing Release work orders to shop & issue dispatch lists for individual machines Monitoring Maintain progress reports on each job until it is complete Loading assigning work to limited resources Assignment Method – Basic Steps 1. Perform row reductions subtract minimum value in each row from all other values in that row 2. Perform column reductions subtract minimum value in each column from all other values in that column 3. Result is an opportunity cost matrix cross out all zeros in matrix using minimum number of horizontal and vertical lines (lines test) 4. Lines Test If # of lines equals # of rows in matrix, optimum solution has been found. Make assignments where zeros appear. Otherwise modify matrix by subtracting minimum uncrossed value from all uncrossed values and adding it to all cells where two lines intersect. All other values in the matrix remain unchanged. 5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until an optimum solution reached Reading Pages middle 756 – top 760 761 – middle 767 bottom 768 – 771
