28 Solution: Here is the correct Lewis structure. This molecule actually does have resonance. Although the structure on the left has the better formal charges the structures are close enough so that both will make significant contributions to the resonance hybrid. The simple bonding theory you learned cannot be used to describe the actual molecule (resonance hybrid). So we will answer this question by looking at the two Lewis structures below. The central atom has 2 domains in both structures. Two domains require sp hybridization. The valence electrons of N are in the 2 s and 2 p orbitals so the sp hybrid orbitals will be constructed from one 2 s and one 2 p atomic orbitals on the N atom.
