28 Solution: Here is the correct Lewis structure. This molecule actually does have resonance. Although the structure on the left has the better formal charges the structures are close enough so that both will make significant contributions to the resonance hybrid. The simple bonding theory you learned cannot be used to describe the actual molecule (resonance hybrid). So we will answer this question by looking at the two Lewis structures below. The central atom has 2 domains in both structures. Two domains require sp hybridization. The valence electrons of N are in the 2 s and 2 p orbitals so the sp hybrid orbitals will be constructed from one 2 s and one 2 p atomic orbitals on the N atom. There are two bonds in each of the resonance structures. The N–O bond is made from the overlap of a sp hybrid from N and a 2 p orbital on O.. The N–N bond is made from the overlap of a

Unformatted text preview: sp hybrid from the central N and a 2 p orbital on the outside N. .The bonds in the N–N bond are made from the overlap of a 2 p orbital on the outside N and a left over 2 p atomic orbital on the central N. The N O bond in the right resonance structure is made from a 2 p orbital on O and a left over 2 p on N. The purple statements below are correct. The O atom uses a 2p atomic orbital to make a bond The hybridization on N is sp The molecule contains 2 bonds The molecule contains 2 bonds The N atom uses hybrid orbitals made by mixing one 2 s , one 2 p , atomic orbitals The central N atom uses a 2 p atomic orbital to make a bond This diagram shows the electron configuration for the N 1 central atom after a 2 s electron has been moved to the 2 p ....
