2 Solution: The electron configuration of C is shown in the figure. 2p ↑↑ 2s ↑↓ 1s ↑↓ The ionization process always removes the highest energy electrons. The first and second ionization process removes 2p electrons. The second and third ionization process removes 2s electrons. After four electrons are removed C 4 is isoelectronic with He. The fifth and sixth electrons must be taken from the 1s orbital which has a much larger negative energy compared to the 2s and 2p. The length of the arrows in the plot below are proportional to the ionization energy. The diagram below shows that the ionization energy increases
