CH. 4 The 2 nd Week of Human Development Continuation of Embryonic Development -Syncytiotrophoblast invades endometrial CT and allows blastocyst to embed into the endometrial endometrium at the embryonic pole (embryoblast). - Syncytiotrophoblastic cells displace endometrial cells, - Endometrial cells go through apoptosis (programmed cell death) - Maternal endometrium invades for implantation. - CT cells around implantation site become loaded with glycogen and lipids - Some become decidual cells (degenerating cells) - SCTB engulfs some decidual cells provides embryonic nutrition - As blastocyst implants more trophoblast touches endometrium 2 layers - Cytotrophoblast mononucleated cells mitotically active that form new trophoblastic cells - Syncytiotrophoblast rapidly expanding multinucleated mass in which no cell boundaries are discernible - SCTB produces human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) enters maternal blood through the lacunae of the SCTB. - hCG pregnancy test hormone - maintains the corpus luteum - corpus luteum glandular structure that secretes estrogen and progesterone to maintain
