Spinal Anatomy Exam 1 Lecture Notes Vertebral Column: - 72-75 cm in length(Adults) - Cranium -> Apex of coccyx - 33 Vertebral bodies -> divided into 5 regions 0. Cervical - ( C1 – C7 ) 1. Thoracic - ( T1 – T12 ) 2. Lumbar - ( L1 – L5) 3. Sacral - ( S1 – S5 ) 4. Coccyx - ( Co1 – Co4 ) - 24 Vertebral bodies are movable ( C1 – C7, T1 – T12, L1 – L5 ,S1) - 9 Vertebral bodies are fused ( S1 - S5, Co1 - Co4) - Function: o Flexion o Extension o Lateral Rotation - Nervous Systems o CNS = Brain + Spinal Cord o PNS = Cranial Nerves + Spinal Nerves - 2 Types of Curves o Primary Curvatures – ( Primary because they are present during birth) Thoracics Sacral o Secondary Curvatures Cervical Lumbar - Abnormal Curvatures o Kyphosis “ Hunchback ” Exaggerated posterior curvature in the thoracic region o Lordosis “ Swayback ” Exaggerated anterior curvature in the lumbar region o Scoliosis Lateral curvature Vertebrae Structures: 2. Verterbal Body: o Located on Anterior side o Different in each region Cervical Thoracic Lumbar o Function – Weight bearing
